The Center for Professional Social Work Education at Vytautas Magnus University was established in 1992. The idea was developed by Lithuanian Caritas and supported by American Bishops' Conference and Caritas. In 2002 Center was reorganized to Social Work Institute. On completion of the four- year course students receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. The master study program for MA Degree in Social Work field was started in 1992.

Social Work Institute comprizes the Department of Social Work, Center of Social Integration and Center of Social Welfare Education, all three bodies established in 2002.
