The College of Religious Studies is a governmental educational institution. It is open to everyone who wishes to gain knowledge of, and to work in the sphere of Catholic religious education.
The studies are compatible with the Catholic program of religion teaching, confirmed by the Ministry of Education and the Lithuanian Catechetical Center.
The College of Religious studies prepares teachers of religion for primary and secondary schools, as well as parish catechists.
The school program contains theological subjects (theology of spirituality, fundamental, dogmatic and moral theology, theology of the Old and the New Testaments, documents of the II Vatican Council, liturgical studies and the basis of the Church law), background of different religions, philosophy, theory of economics. Students are also taught to informatics and foreign languages, and different courses of pedagogy and psychology.
History
College of Religious Studies started with the courses taught at Kaunas Interdiocesan Seminary. Those who finished the courses and passed the exams got the qualification of a primary school teacher of religion. 457 teachers finished these courses during the period of 19901993.
In 1993 the courses were rearranged into a catechetical school that was in the structure of the Faculty of Theology of Kaunas Interdiocesan Seminary. In 1998 the school was reorganized into Catechetical College of Lithuanian Catechetical Center. 306 diplomas were presented to the graduates during 19931999.
On October 10, 1999 the College of Lithuanian Catechetical Center was registered as Kaunas Catechetical College, founded by the Lithuanian Catechetical Center and the Ministry of Education.
Following the general reform of universitarian studies in Lithuania, on July 15, 2003 Lithuanian Government decided to establish the College of Religious Studies.
