Initiatives of Education and Formation

Various initiatives of education are carried out by the Church institutions, Catholic lay associations, non-governmental groups of Christian background, religious congregations. Most of the mentioned organizations and groups consider their educational activities in the broader context of evangelization or social intentions.

Kauno arkivyskupijos Šeimos centrų dekanatų darbuotojų stovykla The diocesan Family Centers provide courses on different aspects of family life, including marriage preparation program. Since 1997 all Catholic engaged couples, who want to be married in the Catholic Church must attend preparatory courses. The courses are offered by the diocesan Family centers or smaller family centers, available in some parishes or deanery centers. The courses include lectures on communication, principles of natural family planning, basic experience of children education and the Sacramental doctrine of the Church. Lithuanian Family Center and Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference have elaborated the general outlook of the preparation courses. Each diocesan center applies the outlook according to specific possibilities. In 2004 Lithuanian Bishops' Conference initiated the renewal of marriage preparation program.

Jaunimo vadovų seminaras.Diskusijos, aptarimai mažose grupėse The diocesan Youth Centers carry out various educational and preventive programs intended for youth. The active parishes, often joined with religious congregations or organizations, offer various possibilities of Christian formation, lecture courses and special retreats.

Some lay organizations have the background of specific spirituality often related to religious congregation. The Institute of Faith and Life was established 1998. It is based on the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Institute offers the wide choice of programs and seminars. The Franciscan Youth Service of Kretinga is active mainly in the western Lithuania and Kaliningrad region. Cooperators of Marian Fathers, the Friends of Salesians, Dominican youth are in cooperative relationship with corresponding congregations. The Congregation of St. John (both men and women branches) the Assumption sisters and other communities of consecrated life offer regular courses of formation, often marked by specific charisma of those congregations.

Jaunimo, dalyvaujančio socialinės paramos seniems žmonėms programoje, seminarasThe non-governmental organization Actio Catholica Patria is well known for broad activities in social and educational area. The organization is cooperating with Catholic organizations abroad, mainly in Germany. The Center of Spiritual Aid for Youth was established 1995 in Klaipėda. The Center plays the important role in the third largest Lithuanian city of Klaipėda. It helps the people of the region with various educational, social and preventive programs.

The Lithuanian association of the International Federation of Doctors Who Respect Human Life is among the most active pro-life organizations in Lithuania, known for publishing activities, prominent conferences etc. The organization enjoys support of the Church. Several organizations concentrate their efforts against social harm of alcoholism and drug addiction. The Sobriety Society of Motiejus Valančius, especially successful in the past, is known for publishing activities, conferences, work with the youth.

The associations, studios and schools of sacral music foster the Christian cultural values and contribute to the integral formation of human person. The diocesan museums of Christian art and culture are established in the dioceses of Telšiai, Vilkaviškis, Kaunas. The Cultural Center of Alfonsas Lipniūnas in Panevėžys carries out the programs of education and culture.

The Catholic movements and associations, both Lithuanian and international have elaborated specific traditions of Christian formation: the Lithuanian Federation Ateitis (Future), Eucharistijos bičiuliai (Friends of Eucharist), groups and communities of Charismatic Renewal, Focolare, Neocatechumenat, Communione e liberazione, Faith and Light and others. Significant educational projects are carried out by Kolping Association and the prelature of Opus Dei.
