Kaunas, October 12: Decree on Pastoral Care of Persons Having Weak Relationship with Parish Communities
Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius made public his Decree
on Pastoral Care of Persons Having Weak Relationship with Parish Communities – during the ordinary meeting with the clergy of Kaunas Archdiocese on October 12 . Archbishop explained that priests often encounter with the faithful who have only minimal knowledge of faith and almost no relationship with their parish. They ask for religious services of baptism, marriage or funerals to be administered possibly quickly and according to their requirements, which sometimes even cause conflicts with Church ministers. As general principle Archbishop suggested that in such situations Church ministers should try “ to gain those faithful for the Church, not to reject them”. The priests should also use the occasion providing evangelization and appropriate catechesis for those persons – and to administer sacraments only after due preparation.
According to the Decree, no pastoral motives can justify administration of baptism or marriage “in exotic environment instead of being performed in the church”. The Decree also criticized priests who tend to administer more sacraments for motives of financial interest, neglecting due catechetical preparation.
