Telđiai, September 20–21: New President of Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference Elected
The plenary session of Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference (LBC) took place in Telđiai on September 20–21. Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius was elected new President of LBC for the ordinary term of 3 years. He will also chair at two bodies within LBC: the Commission for Social Communication and Council for Social Affairs. Cardinal Audrys Bačkis having completed his 3 years term as President of LBC, became Vice-president of LBC. Cardinal Bačkis will also chair the LBC Commission of Education and the Council for Family. Bishop Jonas Boruta was reelected Chairman of the LBC Commission for Liturgy and the Council for Ecumenical relations. Bishop Rimantas Norvila was reelected Chairman of the LBC Council for Youth and the LBC Council for the Relations with Polish Bishops’ Conference. Auxiliary Bishop Jonas Ivanauskas was elected to chair the LBC Council for Lay Apostolate.
Lithuanian Bishops also approved the new program of religion teaching in public schools and decided to reorganize the Lithuanian Catechetical Center, replacing its office from Kaunas to Vilnius.
Rev. Robertas Grigas was repeatedly aproved in the office of Director of Lithuanian Caritas for the new 3 years term.
