Žemaičių Kalvarija, July 1–12: Annual Indulgenced Feast Started

The Major indulgenced feast in Žemaičių Kalvarija , the main sanctuary of the diocese of Telšiai, started on July 1. The feast traditionally takes place on July 2–12. Bishop of Telšiai Jonas Boruta said, ca. 20 thousands of pilgrims were expected to visit the shrine during the feast days. On June 30 the miraculous image of Our Lady with Child Jesus was solemnly returned to Žemaičių Kalvarija Shrine after two-year restoration. Investigation and restoration of the image took place in Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre in Vilnius. According to the Bishop of Telšiai Jonas Boruta, the image will be coronated with a papal crown next year.

The tradition of indulgenced feast in Žemaičių Kalvarija goes back to the XVII century. The shrine in Žemaičių Kalvarija is famous with the chapels (“hills”) forming 20 stations of the Cross, and the Basilica of Visitation with miraculous image of Our Lady.
