Kaunas, April 11: Archbishop Tamkevičius Criticised Categorical Demands of Medics
“Categorical claims of medics of 50 percent increase in wages would become a menace to common good”, said Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius commenting a plan of national medical strike on May 17. Archbishop Tamkevičius said the strike of medics would provoke similar demands by other professional groups: “ Eventual turmoil would menace the common welfare and therefor would be contrary to Christian ethics”. In April 11 interview with news agency ELTA Archbishop Tamkevičius quoted the Catechism of Catholic Church, 2435: “Recourse to a strike is morally legitimate when it cannot be avoided, or at least when it is necessary to obtain a proportionate benefit. It becomes morally unacceptable <…> when objectives are included that are <…>not directly linked to working conditions or are contrary to the common good”.
